Chandeliers

Q: Chandeliers can be overwhelming. How do I choose one for my home?

Pam:It used to be that the twinkling lights of chandeliers were used to prove ones’ wealth, often dangled in impressive entryways. But now, chandeliers have become a different sort of statement—a functional lighting device that is not afraid to be beautiful. Chandeliers add sparkle and style to your foyer and dining room, giving you the general lighting you need as well as a focal point of the home.

Shane:In recent years designers have branched out to create lighting chandeliers that are at ease in any room of your home. From the kitchen to the den, over a living room grouping or a grand piano- in any room - a chandelier makes a stunning declaration. Mini chandeliers are being used in smaller areas such as bedrooms and bathrooms.

Pam:Some chandeliers are designed with downlights to provide task lighting for homework or table games, or to accent table settings. The addition of a dimmer control lets you alter the intensity of light to suit the mood and activity.

Shane:For your dining room, choose a chandelier with a diameter equal to or more than 1/2 the width of the table.

Pam:For your foyer—or any room—simply add the room dimensions together. For example, if your foyer is 12' by 16,' add 12 + 16 =28. The proper size chandelier for this foyer would be 28" in diameterIf the fixture can be viewed from above, be sure to select a foyer fixture which looks attractive from second story viewing.
